Analysis & Previews

Defender Yuji Nakazawa is out of Japan's Confederations Cup squad because of a knee injury and will be replaced by FC Tokyo's Teruyuki Moniwa. Feyenoord midfielder Shinji Ono is also not in the squad after breaking a metatarsal bone in his right foot.

Mexico go into the FIFA Confederations Cup with an 18-match unbeaten record since they crashed 4-0 to Brazil at the Copa America quarter-finals in Peru last July but their preparations were hit by the withdrawal of striker Cuauhtemoc Blanco and the possible release of five players due to club commitments. Blanco pulled out of the squad one day after leading his club America to the domestic title at the end of May, saying he was tired. Guadalajara, who have had five players selected, have asked for them to be released to play in the Libertadores Cup, which clashes with the tournament in Germany. But FIFA have required Mexico to be in full strength and ordered them to recall the four players who were released to play for their club, Guadalajara. Captain Rafael Marquez who is suffering from a groin injury, will not be available for Mexico's first match against Japan.
