Analysis & Previews

An era is ending for Australian soccer as Australia meet Uruguay with a place in the World Cup finals. Australia's move from the 12-member Oceania confederation to the 45-strong Asian confederation earlier this year means that their four-yearly playoff with tough opponents for a place in the finals will soon be a thing of the past. From next year Australia will take part in Asian international and club competitions. Their chances of getting to the World Cup finals -- where Asia currently has four places -- will therefore improve considerably. In the last play-offs, 4 years ago they beat Uruguay 1-0 at home then lost the second leg 3-0 away when they developed an untimely case of stage fright. The players were abused and spat on when they arrived in Montevideo four years ago and this time the squad will delay travelling to Uruguay until the eve of the match at Montevideo's Estadio Centenario and are currently training in Argentina. They also lost to Scotland in a playoff for the 1986 World Cup, Argentina (1994) and Iran (1998). Captain Craig Moore has been left out of the squad because of a hamstring injury. Liverpool midfielder Harry Kewell, who has battled a succession of injuries over the last two years, was included in the squad, which contains just one player from Australia's domestic soccer league, striker Archie Thompson.

Defender Diego Lugano and midfielders Omar Pouso and Gustavo Varela are all suspended for Uruguay for the first leg. Villareal forward Diego Forlan remained doubtful for the tie after failing to take part in training on Tuesday and could be sidelined for up to three weeks. Striker Javier Chevanton, who scored five goals in the South American qualifying group, was left out following his recent row with coach Jorge Fossati. Suspended players Diego Lugano, Omar Pouso and Gustavo Varela, along with deputy coach Eduardo Del Capellan and  Mexico-based players Sebastian Abreu and Martin Liguera who miss the first leg, have already traveled to Australia on Wednesday. Goalkeeper Fabian Carini did not train early this week because of a groin strain, but is expected to be fit on Saturday as first-choice keeper Sebastian Viera is recovering from a broken collarbone.
