Analysis & Previews

San Marino, the tiny republic in the middle of Italy with a population of just 28,000, has yet to win a World Cup qualifier and their team of part-timers and amateurs lost 3-0 to Bosnia on Saturday to remain point-less at the foot of the group with a negative goal difference of 34-2. They have managed to pick up just two draws in qualifying against Turkey in 1993 and Latvia in 2001 so far in their World Cup history.

Spain trail Group Seven leaders Serbia & Montenegro by two points with one game to play but could take the top spot if Serbia lose against Bosnia on Wednesday and Spain win. Serbia & Montenegro are guaranteed top spot if they beat Bosnia-Herzegovina in their final game but if they lose, a Spanish victory of less than 5 goals over unfancied San Marino will allow them to snatch first place. If Serbia & Montenegroand Bosnia-Herzegovina draw, Spain could also earn a direct place in next year's World Cup as long as they beat San Marino by a margin of five goals. A four-goal victory might also be enough if Serbia are involved in a low-scoring draw. Both Xavi and Michel Salgado are suspended.
